Forest city

As I entered this project I had to choose an artist on whose style is what I would base my final piece. I wanted to try something new and different so I chose to go for a stylized piece and chose Jazmin Habezai-Fekri as the artist I’d base my project’s style on. Choosing such a stylized style for my project was something new and I wanted to challenge myself even more so I decided to create an outdoor scene. In the end I chose to create an environment inspired by Three Tree City a Magic The Gathering card illustrated by Grady Frederick

I started the project by making a grey box of my environment layout.

From there I started modeling the tree. As this was going to be the central part of the environment.

So I took the rough block out of it and from it developed my tree model adding branches, trunk and roots.

After that I made the other models I would need for the scene, mostly different types of buildings, foliage and other props that would help populate the scene accordingly.

At the same time, I developed the landscape and the materials for my models and the environment.

I created all my materials for this project through Substance Designer and applied them on Substance Painter. After that i took the textures into Unreal Engine and applied them to the different meshes.

I added foliage: grass, bushes, roots and I used SpeedTree for the other trees.

Then I worked on lighting my scene to make it look similar to my style reference.

In the end I am very satisfied with final result and I am satisfied that I achieved my goal of learning the new style and applied it into my own work.

However, I went back and revisited the project. Even though I was satisfied with the result I thoguht I could improve it by adding a few more things, adjusting the lighting and fixing the fog.

I also worked on the shadows and tried to make them stronger to really drive the mood of the scene.

I also added this lantern model to mkae it feel more like a real city, thinking on how it might look at night.

And I also added some emissive intensity to the flowers and the lanterns to serve as a small guide for players.
